My Refuge Are You, O Lord!
Dearest brothers and sisters in Christ,
May the peace of the Lord always be with us.
During this month of September, we celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, contemplating the Cross not only as a symbol, as an object to wear around our necks, to hang on our walls or on the steeples of our churches, but as a sign of our personal identity: we belong to Christ, because the Son of God gave His life for us.
“But God proves His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(Romans 5:8)
The saving action of Jesus is renewed every moment. We are all still sinners, always journeying towards our heavenly destination, and in the Cross we find a safe refuge, our only certainty, because:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.”
(John 3:16)
No one is exempt from suffering. Indeed, on September 15, we celebrated the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Mother of Jesus, who at the foot of the Cross fully lived the prophecy:
“Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother: ‘Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted—and you yourself a sword will pierce—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.’”
(Luke 2:34–35)
Grateful for the gift of life, created by God in His image, and although we are not free from difficulties and fears, let us look to the Cross and, contemplating Psalm 91, make these words our own:
“Yes, You are my refuge, O Lord! You have made the Most High Your dwelling place.”
And let us whisper to the Lord with faith:
“My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
(Psalm 91:2)
Confident in the promises and in the love of the Father for His children!
On September 29, we will celebrate the Feast of the Archangels: Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. We entrust ourselves to their holy protection in our daily battle against the enemy.
